Capricorn Citizen Advocacy Rockhampton assists people with disability who may rely heavily on others to support them every day, especially if they are segregated from the general community and are isolated. 

Everyone needs justice, acceptance, love, security and control over the course of their lives. From time to time we all need practical support and representation. Unfortunately these human needs are often not met for people with disabilities. This disadvantage and vulnerability creates a need to have someone who:

• Is prepared to take action when action is needed
• Will ensure that the person’s interests are understood and effectively responded to
• Is prepared to take the person’s life seriously
• Will look at issues and situations from that person’s point of view

A one-to-one unique relationship

Citizen Advocacy between an Advocate and a Protégé is achieved by:

• Taking time to get to know one another
• Sharing new skills together
• Reflecting on another person’s life
• Trying new experiences
• Ensuring a person is treated with respect and dignity
• Working towards an informed decision
• Ensuring a person’s rights are recognised
• Representing a person’s right to make their own decisions
• Seeing the world through another person’s eyes
• Being there, offering support and helping out when problems arise
